Transferring a Photo From Sony a6000 To a Smartphone
Sony’s a7/a7R, a6000, NEX cameras are WI-FI enabled and allow direct connection from camera to smartphone. Simply enable the camera to become a WIFI hotspot, and use Sony’s “Play Memories” app, and you can directly transfer, even without a nearby WIFI network.

Hi, I too am encountering the same issue. I can connect from phone to camera using the camera menu but my photos do not transfer. Phone is an Huawei Mate 20 Pro running a recently installed Play Memories app. Would very much appreciate your take on this. Regards, Dave

Sony recently discontinued the “Play Memories” app and switched it to “Imaging Edge”. With that change, all of the apps disappeared.
